How to Prevent Duplicate Voting in an Online Election
Learn the controls an online election needs to give each eligible voter one successful ballot without relying on browser-only checks.

Start with a clean electorate
Preventing duplicate voting starts with a defined list of eligible people. Each person should have one approved voter record for the election. A person entered under two different email addresses may otherwise appear to be two eligible voters.
Review duplicates before launch using the eligible voter list guide. A software check cannot decide whether two differently named entries are the same person.
Give each voter individual access
Votes.ng provides a personal voting link and an email plus voting-code method. Both reach the same voting right. They do not give a person two ballots.
Keep access private and explain that forwarding it may let someone else attempt to use it. Read Voting Links and Voting Codes.
Record the ballot and participation together
An election should not mark a person as having voted if their ballot was never recorded. It also should not accept a ballot while leaving that voter free to submit again.
Votes.ng records a successful Live ballot and participation together. Each eligible voter record can submit at most one Live ballot, including when requests arrive close together or different access methods are used.
Disabling a button helps the experience, but duplicate protection must also hold when someone opens another tab or tries again.
Handle an uncertain connection calmly
A lost connection can leave a voter unsure whether submission succeeded. The supported retry process is designed to avoid creating another Live ballot for the same submission.
Follow the on-screen instructions. If confirmation is still unclear, contact the organizer rather than creating another voter record or submitting through an informal channel. Keep any receipt for the verification page.
Replace access through the approved workflow
When unused access is lost or exposed, confirm the existing eligible record first. Use the supported access replacement process rather than adding the person again. Replacing access does not restore a voting right already used for a successful Live ballot.
Repeated incorrect code attempts are restricted. Voters should use their correct election email and code and ask the organizer for help when needed.
Preserve privacy
Duplicate protection should not require the organizer to see named choices. Votes.ng keeps ballot choices separate from the voter participation record. See private online voting.
Organizer checklist
- Approve one eligible record per person.
- Review import warnings and shared or incorrect email addresses.
- Keep each voter’s access out of public messages.
- Test both access methods with sample voters.
- Confirm a second successful ballot is blocked.
- Handle access issues through the existing record.
